Troubleshooting Diesel Generator Power Failures

Diesel generator sets serve as crucial backup power sources, providing stable electricity supply in various settings. However, instances of failure to generate power may arise, necessitating prompt identification and resolution to ensure continuity and reliability of power supply. Below, we elaborate on the potential causes and corresponding troubleshooting methods for diesel generator not generating power.

1. Residual Magnetism Loss

The frequent loss of residual magnetism after shutdown is often due to the materials used in the excitation machine's magnetic pole being close to soft steel, resulting in minimal residual magnetism. Remedial measures include maintaining backup batteries and pre-magnetizing before power generation to ensure the presence of a magnetic field.

2. Generator Pole Demagnetization

Demagnetization of the generator pole may occur due to prolonged use or other factors. This issue can be addressed by passing a higher-than-rated current of direct current (DC) through the winding for a short period to remagnetize it, with the specific current value determined by experimental results.

3. Excitation Circuit Damage

Damage to components in the excitation circuit or faults in the lines, such as open circuits, short circuits, or ground faults, can impede excitation effectiveness. Resolving this requires promptly replacing damaged components and correcting faulty lines to restore the excitation circuit to normal operation.

4. Brush-Commutator Contact Issues

Poor contact between brushes and the commutator in the excitation machine, or insufficient brush holder pressure, necessitates the removal of surface debris, adjustment of brush pressure, and securing of the brush holder to ensure proper contact.

5. Excitation Windings Wiring Errors

Incorrect wiring of the excitation windings resulting in reversed polarity requires rectification by correcting the wiring and magnetizing according to the correct polarity.

6. Brush-Slip Ring Contact Problems

In cases of poor contact between brushes and slip rings, or insufficient brush pressure, clearing surface debris, grinding the brushes, and adjusting brush pressure are necessary to ensure tight contact between brushes and slip rings.

7. Stator or Rotor Winding Open Circuits

When open circuits occur in the stator or rotor windings, careful inspection and correction of the open circuits are essential to ensure the integrity of the windings.

8. Lead-Out Line Connection Problems

Loose connections or poor contact of generator lead-out lines require timely reconnection of joints or repair of the contact areas of switches to ensure proper circuit continuity.

9. Fuse Blowout

Identifying the cause of fuse blowouts and replacing them with properly rated fuses after confirming the normal operation of the generator and lines ensures safe circuit operation.

By implementing these measures, issues with diesel generator sets not generating power can be comprehensively addressed, ensuring reliable power supply during critical situations and the smooth operation of various facilities.
