Essential Maintenance Tips for Diesel Generator Water Tanks
On this page

The water tank of diesel generator set, as the core component of the cooling system, is crucial for the normal operation and long-term stability of the generator set. Water tank can keep the engine temperature within a safe range and ensure the efficient operation of the generator set under various working conditions. Improper use or maintenance of the water tank may lead to serious faults in the generator set, and even ultimate scrapping. Therefore, to ensure the reliability of the diesel generator set and extend its service life, users must pay special attention to the following key aspects when operating and maintaining the water tank.

Water Source Selection

Use of Soft Water: Soft water, such as rainwater, snow water, and river water, contains fewer minerals and is more friendly to the engine cooling system. This type of water source is suitable for use as engine coolant, which helps to maintain the normal operation of the cooling system.

Problems with Hard Water: Well water, spring water, and tap water usually contain higher levels of minerals, which are prone to deposit on the walls of the water tank, water jackets, and waterways when heated, forming scale and rust. This leads to a decrease in heat dissipation capacity and increases the risk of engine overheating. When using hard water, it is necessary to soften it first, and common methods include heating and adding caustic soda (alkaline solution) to reduce the impact of mineral deposition.

Avoid Dry Startup

In winter or in areas where water sources are far away, some users may choose to start the engine first and then add water. This practice is very likely to lead to dry startup of the engine. When there is no cooling water inside the engine, the parts heat up rapidly, especially the water jackets around the cylinder head and injector, which can become excessively hot. If cooling water is suddenly added at this time, it may cause the cylinder head and water jacket to crack or deform due to sudden cooling. Cooling water should be added when the engine temperature is normal. In case of high temperature, it is recommended to first remove the engine load, idle at low speed, and then add cooling water after the water temperature returns to normal. This helps to prevent damage to parts caused by sudden temperature changes.

Handling Boiling Over Phenomenon

When the water tank boils over, do not immediately open the water tank cover to avoid scalding. The following steps should be taken.

Let the generator idle for a period of time first, and then extinguish the generator after the generator temperature drops and the water tank pressure decreases.
When opening the water tank cover, cover the lid with a towel or a car cloth to prevent hot water and steam from spraying out.
Do not face the water tank directly, quickly let go after unscrewing the cover, and ensure that there is no steam in the water tank before removing the water tank cover.

Preventing Winter Freezing

In the cold winter, it is recommended to add hot water before starting the engine. This not only helps to increase the engine temperature, facilitating startup, but also reduces the risk of freezing in the lower water chamber of the water tank and the intake pipe. Using high-quality antifreeze can effectively prevent the water tank from freezing. However, it should be noted that the quality of antifreeze on the market is uneven, and inferior antifreeze may not contain preservatives, which can easily lead to corrosion of engine parts. Therefore, a reputable brand should be chosen, and antifreeze should be checked and replaced regularly.

Antifreeze Management

The quality of antifreeze directly affects the performance of the cooling system. Inferior antifreeze may lack preservatives, leading to corrosion of engine parts and scale formation. Antifreeze should be replaced in time according to temperature changes, and it should be ensured that the antifreeze contains effective preservatives. When the water level in the water tank drops, only clean soft water (preferably distilled water) should be added, and there is no need to frequently replace the antifreeze. The ethylene glycol component in the antifreeze has a high boiling point, and what evaporates is the water in the liquid, so it is not necessary to replenish the antifreeze every time. Regular cleaning of the cooling pipeline, using a mixture of lye, kerosene, and water for cleaning, helps to remove scale and impurities, maintaining the cleanliness and good operation of the system.

Post-Shutdown Handling of the Engine

When the engine temperature is high, do not immediately shut down and drain the water. The load should be removed first, and the engine should be idled until the water temperature drops to 40-50°C before draining, to prevent cracks in the cylinder block and cylinder head due to excessive temperature difference. When draining, the water tank cover should be opened to avoid the slow or stopped flow of water caused by the vacuum created by the sealed water tank. Especially in winter, it is important to ensure that the inside of the water tank is clean to prevent the freezing of parts.

Following these maintenance suggestions for the generator water tank will help avoid common cooling system problems and improve the operating efficiency and reliability of the generator. Whether it is choosing the right water source, avoiding dry startup, handling the "boiling over" phenomenon of the water tank, preventing winter freezing, managing antifreeze, or correctly handling the post-shutdown situation, reasonable operation and regular maintenance are the keys to ensuring the stable operation of the generator system. By taking these measures, you can effectively extend the service life of the generator, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure its excellent performance under various environmental conditions.
