Effective Methods for Addressing Oil Leaks in Diesel Generator Sets
On this page

Diesel generator sets often encounter oil leakage problems after extended periods of operation, primarily due to increased clearances between components, wear of accessories, or aging seals. To effectively manage these leaks and preserve the performance and reliability of the generator set, various common prevention and repair methods can be employed. Below are several effective techniques to address oil leaks, ensuring the sustained operation and extended longevity of diesel generator sets.

1. Grease-coated Paper Gasket Method

One of the most commonly used methods for handling leaks in diesel generators is the grease-coated paper gasket method. When leaks are found at locations such as the oil sump, cylinder head, gear chamber cover, or crankcase rear cover, follow these steps:

  • Ensure the paper gasket is intact and clean the mating surfaces thoroughly.
  • Apply a layer of grease evenly on both sides of the paper gasket.
  • Tighten the bolts to ensure a good sealing performance.
  • If replacing with a new paper gasket, soak it in diesel for about 10 minutes, clean it, and apply grease to prevent leakage from the new gasket.

2. Lacquer Film Treatment Method

For minor leaks in parts like the diesel engine fuel tank, water tank, or crankcase, the lacquer film treatment method can be used:

  • Soak lacquer films in alcohol to liquefy them.
  • Clean and dry the surface around the leaking area.
  • Apply lacquer film to the joints and allow it to cure to form a leak-proof layer.
  • This method is suitable for small-area leaks and can quickly repair oil leakage issues.

3. Application of Liquid Sealant

When boundary leaks occur due to defects in solid gaskets (such as washers), liquid sealants can be used for repairs:

  • Clean the surface of the solid gasket joint to ensure it is clean and free of oil.
  • Apply liquid sealant to the gasket surface.
  • Allow the liquid sealant to cure, forming a uniform and stable leak-proof film.
  • This method is applicable when enhancing leak-proof performance on existing sealing surfaces is required.

4. Adding Washers to Control Leaks

At joints like oil pipe connections in diesel generator sets, adding a layer of double-sided slippery plastic washers on both sides of the anti-leak washer can enhance its leak-proof capabilities. This method is suitable for relatively simple leakage problems requiring improved sealing.

5. Application of Standard Reclaim Adhesive

Standard reclaim adhesive is a coating repair method suitable for addressing oil leakage issues in bearings, valves, self-tightening oil seals, and similar components:

  • Apply standard reclaim adhesive to cleaned and worn areas.
  • Allow the adhesive to cure, forming a thin film layer with wear resistance and high mechanical strength.
  • Finally, restore the geometric shape and fit accuracy of the parts through machining.
  • This method is ideal for components requiring long-term repair and maintaining high-strength leak-proof performance.

In summary, selecting the appropriate leak prevention method is crucial for addressing oil leakage issues in diesel generator sets. Depending on the location of the leak, severity, and maintenance conditions, a combination of the above methods can be considered to ensure stable operation and prolong the lifespan of the equipment.
